Period Talk: Kenny, Trans Model
Wouldn’t it be easier if we were all more open about the perfectly normal bodily function we experience each month? We think so. Each week, a member of our very own #PPSquad will be sharing their period stories with you. Read, comment, share your own. Every story is welcome here.
This week’s period talk is from Kenny, a trans model in our “I’M ON” campaign.
What can you remember about your first period?
“There was a lot of confusion when I first started my period, my body didn’t really understand what was going on. During my teens I was really agitated, I just couldn’t wait for them to stop.”
What do you think is the biggest misconception about periods when transitioning?
“I think this is a topic that is rarely discussed since so many transgender individuals will attempt to hide this point of their life. I believe the biggest misconception is that it will be over in a flash – it stays with you forever. Even though I no longer bleed, I still have the pain of periods from time to time.”
How was your relationship with your body before your transition?
“It caused a real disconnect and looking down or looking in the mirror and seeing the opposite gender to how I felt was a daily challenge. Things like changing, taking showers and anything that would involve me being somewhat naked could make me uncomfortable.”
What do you love most about your body now?
“My torso! I went from being a skinny boy to a grown man with a six-pack and a beard. It took me years to get to this comfortable place within myself and now I’m going to show the world.”
